Explore the Physics of Sound with NI LabVIEW

This lesson uses the Physics of Sound Instrument from the Ergopedia - Essential Physics curriculum. It allows students to visualize live sound using 3 different engineering plots. The waveform graph, the Spectrum plot and the Spectrogram. This instrument is a powerful tool that can enable a new understanding of sound.

OBJECTIVE

As students complete this lesson, they’ll have the opportunity to meet the following learning objectives:
 
Physics—Students explore and understand concepts of sound, waves, and frequency.
Mathematics – Students explore sine functions, various plots, and Fourier Transforms in a concrete way.

MATERIALS

  • Physics of Sound LabVIEW Instrument (exe)
  • Windows or OSX computer with a microphone

OPTIONAL MATERIALS

  • External microphone that can be plugged into your computer
  • Various Musical Instruments
  • Tuning forks
  • Various Coins
  • Smart Phone / iPad
  • Male to Male Stereo Cable
  • Slide Whistle
  • A Balloon

INSTALATION NOTES

Select the correct link for your operating system to download the Ergopedia - Physics of Sound Application for this lessons. Both downloads includes the LabVIEW 2013 Run Time Engine.

Windows Setup: Unzip the file and run "SetUp.exe"  to install the Physics of Sound Instrument and the required support files. The installer will automaticaly install the LabVIEW Run Time Engine and add a desktop shortcut for the Physics of Sound Executable.

Mac OS X Setup: Unzip the file and run LabVIEW2013RunTimeEngine.dmg to install the LabVIEW Run Time Engine, then open the Physics of Sound Application.
